James F. “Jim” Oates, 77, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, following an extended illness.

Born on March 19, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland, Jim was the son of the late James W. and Angelina E. Oates. Throughout his life, Jim was known as a good and honorable man—honest, friendly, dependable, and always ready to share a laugh. His warm personality and wonderful sense of humor endeared him to family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service as an Inventory Management Supervisor. His military career reflected the qualities that defined him throughout his life: commitment, responsibility, hard work, and loyalty. Even after retiring from the Air Force, Jim was not quite ready to slow down. He continued working part-time in logistics, assisting with office moving and relocation services.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed staying active by playing softball and racquetball. A true Baltimore sports fan, he faithfully followed the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens. Long before the Ravens came to town, Jim was a devoted Baltimore Colts fan and carried with him many fond memories of watching the Colts and spending time at Baltimore’s old Memorial Stadium.

Jim also enjoyed trips to the casino, playing poker, and the friendly competition that came along with both. Football season was especially enjoyable for him, and friends and family could count on Jim to organize the annual football pools—a tradition that became part of the fun of the season. At home, he enjoyed relaxing in front of the television and simply appreciating the comforts of everyday life.

Above all else, Jim cherished his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Helen M. Oates; his son, James Joseph Oates; his stepson, James M. Busi; and his beloved grandson, Michale James Oates. They, along with his late sister Gloria Ann Sessions’ children Michelle Glasener, Timothy Zalenski and Gloria’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren all in the Wisconsin area as well as many loving cousins who Jim grew up with and remained close with through his life, and many friends, will forever remember his kindness, humor, honesty, and the steady presence he brought into their lives.

Jim lived a life of service—to his country, to his work, and most importantly, to the people he loved. His passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of those who knew him, but the many memories he created, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
