  • Do I have to purchase a casket for direct cremation?

No. A casket is not required for direct cremation in Washington, DC, Virginia, or Maryland. A simple alternative container is used, which is included in our Direct Cremation package.

  • Is embalming required for cremation?

No. Embalming is not required for direct cremation in DC, VA, or MD when there is no public viewing.

  • How long does the cremation process take?

In most cases, cremation is completed within 7–14 days, depending on:

    ● Required authorizations

    ● Medical Examiner review (if applicable)

    ● Jurisdiction where the death occurred

  • Can we still have a memorial service later?

Yes. Many families choose to hold a memorial service days or weeks later—at a church, home, cemetery, or private venue. Direct cremation allows maximum flexibility.

  • What if the death occurred at home?

    Deaths at home may require:

    ● Pronouncement by a physician or hospice

    ● Possible Medical Examiner involvement

We coordinate all required steps based on DC, Virginia, or Maryland regulations.

  • When is the Medical Examiner involved?

Medical Examiner involvement may be required if:

    ● The death was unexpected

    ● No physician was in attendance

    ● The death occurred outside a medical facility

This is common and does not necessarily delay cremation significantly.

  • Are cremation authorizations required?

    Yes. All three jurisdictions require:

    ● A signed cremation authorization from legal next of kin

    ● A certified death certificate

We prepare and file all documentation on your behalf.

  • Can cremated remains be buried or scattered?

    Yes. Cremated remains may be:

    ● Buried in a cemetery

    ● Placed in a columbarium

    ● Scattered where permitted by law

Scattering regulations vary by location; we can advise you based on your plans.

  • Do you serve all of DC, Northern Virginia & Maryland?

Yes. American Funeral & Cremation serves the entire Capital Region, including:

    ● Washington, DC

    ● Northern Virginia

    ● Maryland

We coordinate transfers and arrangements throughout the region.

  • Is payment required upfront?

In most cases, payment is required prior to cremation. We will review all costs clearly and compassionately before proceeding.
